What is Region Coding?

The powers that be in the movie world decided that a global format for DVDs is against their best interests for marketing their movies so the following standards or regions exist for the following geographical areas:

• Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada
• Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland
• Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
• Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
• Region 5 - Russia (okay, former Russia), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
• Region 6 - China

What this effectively means for the consumer is that they need special equipment to be able to watch a movie from another area or region.

What does 'customising' mean?

Customising usually involves soldering an additional microchip onto a circuit board to give it added functionality.

Is customising legal?

There is no law in the UK which prevents you from modifying your equipment in whichever way you want. You are free to purchase media from other markets including USA or Asia.

Can I carry out the modifications myself?

Yes. You can buy components and fit them yourself. However you will need some special tools and some knowledge or experience of soldering to circuit boards otherwise you risk damaging your equipment.

There are several ways of getting around this problem:

1. Import a region-compatible machine and have it adjusted so that it will run on local power and televisions.
2. Find a region-code which is sometimes programmed into the machines by the manufacturers, this is a good page to try for a code for your machine:

3. The third work-around is to have your existing equipment customised to make it region-free. Basically it will play DVDs from any region around the world.
